Papers, 1723-1840.

The collection consists of one octavo volume and a folder of correspondence and sermons. The octavo volume is a detailed genealogical and biographical study of the Mellen Family from 1723 to 1840. At the end of the book, reversed, are accounts of the annual Family Meetings (initiated by John Mellen, Sr. in 1795 and continued in the book until 1827). These accounts record family occurrences, vital records, rules, and fines of the family Association. The folder contains copies of several letters of John Mellen, Sr.'s daughter, Charlotte Kent (Mrs. William Austin) (1768-1820), and grandaughter, Sophia Prentiss (1782-1805), concerning family matters; there are also letters written by Mrs. Cooper in 1955 to Miss Ida Mellen concerning the family genealogy. Also included in the folder are eight sermons written by John Mellen, Jr. from 1788 to 1805, mainly in Barnstable.
